After being forced into an early retirement due to heart issues, Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has announced ‘I’m going to the World Cup’ as he eyes a coaching role with Argentina.

Aguero confirmed his playing career was over in December after being diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia shortly after joining Barcelona from Man City.

In an emotional press conference, City’s all-time top scorer revealed that chest pains and breathing issues that occurred during a 1–1 draw with Alaves on October 30 signalled the end of his career.

Now though, Aguero looks set for a swift return to elite level football, aiming to join his national side Argentina as a coach at the 2022 World Cup.

“I’m going to the World Cup in Qatar. We are going to have a meeting this week,” the Premier League’s record foreign goal-scorer told Radio 10.

“I want to be there. The idea is for me to be incorporated into the coaching staff. I spoke with  [manager] Lionel Scaloni and president Claudio Tapia.”

Argentina have already booked their spot in Qatar for the December tournament, securing their place in COMNEBOL’s top four automatic places for South American qualification.

Aguero’s decade-long iconic career in Manchester came to an end last summer when he left on a free transfer to join Spanish giants Barcelona.

Things started off badly though, with Aguero’s good friend and countryman Lionel Messi later forced to leave the Camp Nou to join Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the summer wasn’t all doom and gloom, with Aguero able to lift Argentina’s first Copa America title since 1993 with a win over Brazil at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The former striker, though, recently explained just how limiting his heart issue has become.

“If I try to play football now, I run out of breath,” he said.

“Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be able to sprint again. I just feel like my heart doesn’t work properly.”
