Sergio Aguero’s record as the youngest player to appear in a professional match in Argentina was broken on Thursday – after more than 20 years.
It comes after Deportivo Riestra midfielder Mateo Apolonio was handed his full league debut aged just 14 years and 29 days.

But Apolonio didn’t just beat Aguero’s record that has stood for over two decades, he shattered the ex-Manchester City star’s achievement by more than a year.
Aguero made his debut with Independiente on July 5, 2003 aged 15 years and 33 days old.
However, Apolonio now holds the impressive record following his cameo against Newell’s Old Boys.
Apolonio was introduced in the 84th minute of Riestra’s 1-0 Copa Argentina defeat, replacing midfielder Gonzalo Bravo.
The starlet had little involvement in the action during his history-making stint on the pitch, but the moment was one he will never forget.
Riestra head coach Cristian Fabbiani last week hinted that Apolonio was in line to make his senior debut, claiming the youngster was ready for the demands of professional football.
And before Thursday’s debut, Apolonio revealed details of the moment he found out he had been included in the senior squad.
“I was in the living room of my house, my mother called me and my father was crying on the phone,” Apolonio said in a video posted on the Riestra’s X account.

“And there he told me: ‘You’ve been called up to the first division squad’.
“It is a unique experience and no matter what happens, it will be a beautiful memory for me.”
A packed fixture schedule could see Apolonio build on his first minutes at senior level as soon as Monday, when Riestra face Estudiantes.
